Just days after the death of Grammy winner Amy Winehouse, “Paper Planes” star M.I.A. has joined the brigade of stars (Lady Gaga, Annie Lennox, Kelly Clarkson, Tony Bennett, Usher, U2, James Blunt, and Rufus Wainwright) releasing tributes to the troubled Brit. On Monday, M.I.A. unveiled an Amy tribute song titled “27,” complete with lyrics about blowing money on drugs, failed rehab visits, and drinking yourself into a stupor.
Eh — Too soon?
M.I.A. explained the track was an unreleased demo recorded way before Winehouse’s sudden death on Saturday and added that she decided to release it in tribute to the star and “all my friends that died at 27.”
But fans on Twitter and SoundCloud haven’t exactly responded favorably.
“How is this a ‘dedication’? Am I missing something?” Tweeted one user.
“Seems more like she’s reminding people of the horrible things they all went through!” another chimed in.
